2005
February is rapidly coming to a close; the days just slip by sometimes without knowing where they go. Last month I
forgot to tell you that we had some overnight guests in their RV that had a connection to the past. Michelle and
Dave are traveling around Mexico in their Bounder. Michelle graduated from the same high school I did but 6
years later and her father was my high school science teacher…small world!!!
February brought Karen and Colleen, friends from Taos, NM for a weeklong visit. They came in their RV and
stayed with us on the property. One day we all hacked at the jungle alongside Pablo as we are making progress
to open up the front of the property. We had been afraid to make too many changes to the waterfront as it is the
Federal Zone and we don’t have permission to use it yet, but decided that we need the view and the breezes.
Also while Karen and Colleen were visiting we took a boat ride through Chetumal Bay and up the Rio Hondo. We
saw some mighty crocodiles and we had a great day!!!
On the 9th Mimi, Jonna, Bob and Patty, visitors from last month passed through on their way to Guatemala via
Belize and we saw them on the outskirts of town to send along a gift for our family in the Lake Atitlan area.
On the 15th we headed to Cancun for some maintenance work on the motorhome which took two full days. On our
way into Cancun we were hit by an armored car at a signal. Their mirror caught our passenger side mirror and
then hit at the bottom of the windshield and cracked the glass of the windshield. Drats!!!! Colleen caught the ID
number of the unit and the name of the company and within 20 minutes of our call we had the offending driver
and an insurance adjuster at the mechanic’s shop. They have taken responsibility and will pay for replacement of
the windshield. It will be interesting to see how that works out.
From Cancun we went to Akumal for 2 days where we attended a conference by the Centro Ecologico de Akumal
on environmental considerations for building on the Costa Maya. Some of the speakers were quite interesting and
others were a bore, but we got some good information we can use with our Maricasa project. Speaking of
Maricasa, we are having a contest to design a logo to use on our letterhead and promotional materials. By the
time you read this the contest will probably be over.
We spent three lovely nights in Akumal at Mimi and Jonna’s condo right on the beach. What a nice change it was
from living in the motorhome. I found that I had things strung from one end of the condo to the other as I spread
out everywhere. Moira and Graeme were still in the area and camped in the parking lot at the entrance to Akumal
and we spent a day at the lagoon Yal Ku with them on Sunday after the conference was ended.
From Akumal we went back to Cancun as we had a new ABS idiot light illuminated on the dash panel that wouldn’t
go away that we suspected had to do with the work that was just performed. Moira and Graeme went along to
have some maintenance done on their rig too. They found that the ABS sensor needed cleaning and fixed the
problem. We said a final goodbye to Moira and Graeme and headed home for a day off and to wait for our friends
Marj and Bob to arrive from Santa Fe, NM.
Marj and Bob found us with a little bit of wandering around and asking questions of neighbors who all knew who
we are and helped them along. They spent one night in Chetumal and a morning at the great museum and then
we were off to Xcalak with them. John and Danice were in Chetumal too and left their truck there for some body
work and rode back to Xcalak with us. When we go home in a couple of days they will ride back to Chetumal with
us again.
In between all of the visitors, jungle clearing and boat rides we mix in hours of work on the computer with
translations of legal documents, preparing for our first annual shareholders’ meeting with our business partners
who are all arriving the first of April, contract negotiations with the architect, website maintenance, visits to
accountants and lawyers, trips to dump our holding tanks and fill the fresh water tank, Spanish lessons, and a
myriad of other things that occupy our time. We have found that we are not able to be as efficient at getting work
done here as strict adherence to promises from others does not happen. The days are flying by….
The month finished out with some blissful and busy days with Marj and Bob in Xcalak. We took a great boat ride
with them and John and Danice to Bird Island where we saw Wood Storks, Frigate Birds, a Roseate Spoonbill and
lots of great scenery. After the visit to the birds we went to a nice snorkeling spot inside the reef. Another
wonderful meal at the Leaky Palapa and some cooked at Cielo y Sol (where Danice and John live), and we
headed back to Calderitas.
