The days slip by and I keep busy, but nothing too remarkable happened during the month of January. Again I
have to refer to my photos to try to recapture the days.
A trio of veterinarians with a crew of seven assistants came to nearby Laguna Bacalar and put on a spay and
neuter clinic for five days. I packed up the dogs and drove there in the motorhome to get Mari spayed and
volunteer to help at the clinic. I stayed and worked for 3 days and was exhausted at the end of each day…I don’t
know how the vets, all women, could stand and operate for about 10 hours each day. They were able to neuter
and spay about 50 dogs and cats a day as well as see the occasional emergency. I met some nice women from
Bacalar and enjoyed the stimulation of doing something different.
Work continues on the property and it is looking quite beautiful. We have not cleared any more land at this point
and are working on finishing up some projects and just maintaining what is already cleared. The pond area is
being improved by getting some of the muck out of it, adding some cement and rock to areas of the wall where
there were leaks or it had collapsed over time, and making it deeper at one end for sitting in it.
The waterfront is being enhanced by moving rock (boy do we have rock!) and filling in holes caused by erosion
over the years. The little Yamaha Rhino is proving to be more than just a cute vehicle and we have probably
hauled at least 5 tons of dirt and rock with it.
It is the time of year that the deciduous trees lose their leaves (yes, it is Fall here) and Sam has taken on the task
of keeping the leaves raked up. Having the leaves cleaned up makes it hard for any unsavory critters to hide out
and it is a lot safer and more pleasant to work and walk. I have a new appreciation for why many properties have
cut down many of the trees and left only the palms….the strangler fig trees and almond trees are very beautiful
but they lose leaves constantly all year long. The jabin, mora, botoncillo, and cedro trees will lose them all now
and then not lose them again until next year.
Toward the end of the month an RV caravan came through Calderitas and one of the rigs conked out. The couple
in that large Class A, Bob and Donna, and the tailgunners, Ted and Chris, stayed on at the RV park while the
mechanics worked on the rig. I spent some time each day for a week translating for them and enjoyed helping out.
The end result was that the rig could not be fixed here and was towed to Merida. I haven’t checked to see how it
went there.
We had a visit to our pond from a leatherback turtle that stayed for a couple of days. As far as leatherbacks go, it
was not very big (they get huge). Someone I talked to said that they only come ashore to lay eggs, but I don’t see
any evidence that happened.
The other thing I accomplished during January was to create a new website for a feminist gathering in Santa Fe
that will take place during June this year. I worked with a graphic designer who lives in Ojo Caliente and I did the
mechanics of the site. I have not met Connie, the graphic designer, and we corresponded almost exclusively by
email to get it done. It came out great and you can see it at www.feministhullaballoo.com if you want.
So, according to my photos, that is all that happened in January. The rest of the days have washed up on the
beach of life without leaving any lasting impressions. Life is not much fun without Colleen. I have put some photos
up for January on this website if you are interested. The link is at the top of the page.
Again I am writing this a month after the fact…..February has been more interesting with many visitors and a trip
to Mazatlan which I will tell you all about in the next installment.
